What you do makes a real difference in the lives of those who have lost a loved one. Embalming, restoration and proper presentation of the body genuinely promote the healing process. Working with families to ensure they receive the proper care and service are keys to building your business. This course will give you an introduction to the skills you need to grow and succeed in this important profession.


Communication Between the Funeral Director and the Embalmer

Too often, in-house miscommunication gets in the way of providing excellent service. From the arrangements conference through the preparation of the body and the funeral service, it is vital for funeral directors and embalmers to understand and appreciate the challenges each faces and to be able to work together for the good of the client family.

The results of your restorative arts and cosmetology work are highly visible to the public and can play a major role in the healing experience. Yet too often, instruction in this area takes a back seat. In this laboratory course, each of our professors will participate in discussions and demonstrations on the top RA, cosmetology and casketing concerns, including:

Upkeep of your prep room is a number one priority. This session will review basic OSHA considerations and thoroughly review procedures necessary for maintaining a safe workspace, including instrument and prep room disinfection.

Identifications, authorizations, case reports ... this course takes you through the myriad of legal considerations and forms required to protect yourself, both behind the scenes and when working with families. We'll provide sample forms to take home and adapt to your location.

The Evolution of Chemicals

The man who literally wrote the book on embalming will share his insights into the tools of the trade -- embalming chemicals -- with information on various approaches, including waterless embalming.

Effects of Drugs on the Body
Melissa Johnson
The growing variety of medications presents many challenges for embalmers. Determining what types of drugs the deceased used and the effects of those drugs on the body and the embalming process is an important aspect of case analysis. Learn ways to do this and to handle drug effects such as jaundice, edema, loss or growth of hair, softening of tissues and more.
