A Q&A with ICFA Board Member Dan Flory
President
Cincinnati College of Mortuary Science
Cincinnati, Ohio

Why did you choose to work in the cemetery and funeral service industry?
My background was education, and I had an opportunity in 1978 to join the Cincinnati College of Mortuary Science as an administrator.

What is the best experience you've ever had in your job?
Working with our faculty to develop degree-granting authorities and regional accreditation for CCMS.

What is the worst, and what did you learn from it?
I am happy to say that I can't think of a "worst."

What advice would you give to young people just starting out in this industry?
Get a solid education through the bachelor's degree level and then be entrepreneurial. The funeral and cemetery business of the future will stress service above everything.

What do you see as the biggest benefits of ICFA membership?
Contact with other persons across the nation.

Why do you wish to serve on the ICFA board?
To help the ICFA as it might need contributions from the field of education.

What is the biggest challenge facing the industry, and how is ICFA addressing it?
The continuing fragmentation of our society, the loss of shared beliefs and the lack of perceived value in funeral service. Service and education are key, I believe.

What are your outside interests?
Restoring a Victorian home.

Who are your heroes or role models?
My father-in-law, who was a funeral director for 40 years, was probably the most dynamic, decent, charitable, hard-working person I have known personally. His daughter, my wife, is an equally good and decent person -- both great role models.

If you could "do lunch" today with anyone in the world, living or dead, whom would you choose and why?
There are so many I wouldn't know where to begin. Padre Pio, I think, is one of the most remarkable people of this century.
