ICFA Past President Irwin W. Shipper, CCE, with son David J. Shipper, new ICFA president.

Shipper Takes the ICFA Helm

 

Change "presents challenge, and challenge presents opportunity," newly installed ICFA President David J. Shipper said in brief remarks at the Closing Reception of the association's 2000 convention.

A 21-year veteran of cemetery and funeral service, Shipper brings extensive experience and an understanding of the challenges facing the industry to the association. He paraphrased another president to offer this advice: "Ask not what the consumer can do for you; ask what you can do for the consumer."

Shipper is vice president, Rose Hills Memorial Park, Putnam Valley, New York, consultant to the Loewen Group and president and founder of The Futura Group in Princeton, New Jersey.

Other officers named are:

  • President-elect: Gregory Easley, CCE, executive vice-president and general manager of Westlawn-Hillcrest Memorial Park, Funeral Home, and Crematory in Omaha, Nebraska;

  • Vice President, Educational Steering Committee: Patrick R. Downey, CCE, regional vice president of sales, Carriage Services, Houston Texas;

  • Vice President, Government and Public Affairs Steering Committee: William L. Wright, vice president, Fairlawn Burial Park, Hutchinson, Kansas;

  • Vice President, Membership Steering Committee: Ernest Heffner, president, Heffner Funeral Chapel and Crematory, York, Pennsylvania;

  • Vice President, Services and Administration Steering Committee: Carol E. Caunter, vice president of marketing, Service Corporation International, Toronto, Ontario, Canada;

  • Secretary: Paul Elvig, vice president, Evergreen-Washelli Memorial Park and Funeral Home in Seattle, Washington; and

  • Treasurer: Ray Frew, CPA, CCFE, president of Green Hills Memorial Park in Rancho Palo Verdes, California;

Eight members, including Elvig, were elected to the ICFA Board of Directors for three-year terms. The others are:

  • Barry Berlin, chief operations officer, Hillside Memorial Park and Mortuary, Los Angeles, California;

  • David Brownworth, vice president of sales, the Buchanan Group Inc., Indianapolis, Indiana;

  • Marcia A. Echols of Robertson County Memorial Gardens, Nashville, Tennessee;

  • Francis F. Elliott, CCE, of Saint John's Cemetery, Worcester, Massachusetts;

  • Henry L. Epstein, Epstein Memorial Chapel, Columbus, Ohio;

  • Robert A. McConneghy III of Centinela Group-Parklawn Cemetery, Agoura Hills, California; and

  • David Quiring, CM, FAICA, president, Quiring Monuments Inc., Seattle, Washington.

Thomas Metcalf, director of industry relations, Service Corporation International, Conroe, Texas, was appointed by Shipper to fill an unexpired two-year term.

Past presidents elected to serve a one-year term:

  • Edward C. Laux, CCE, president, Woodlawn Cemetery in The Bronx, New York;

  • John F. Llewellyn, CCE, president/chief executive officer, Forest Lawn Memorial Parks, Glendale, California; and

  • Frederick W. Miller, CCE, vice president/chief financial officer, Pensacola Memorial Gardens, Pensacola, Florida.

Past president Irwin W. Shipper, CCE, of Sarasota Memorial Park, Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, was selected to serve a one-year term on the Executive Committee.
