Hiring Success

by Christine Toson Hentges and Cindy Thompson, CCFE

Everything begins with hiring the right people. Some suggestions:

  • Get more staff involved in hiring. Sometimes when you're desperate to fill a position your instincts will be clouded. If other staff members are involved in the process, someone is likely to point it out when there's something not quite right about an applicant.

  • Put ethics right out on the table during the interview process. Bombard them with some ethical dilemma they might face on the job and ask how they would handle it. Don't wait until someone is hired, trained and in the field to find out how they deal with these issues. You'd be surprised-a lot of times what they tell you is in fact what they would do.

  • Do not settle for people or create positions. You cannot settle for mediocrity; surround yourself with excellence. Set a goal of trying to hire people who are at least one notch above you in terms of what they can teach you and your employees. If you settle, you may be setting yourself up for big problems. And don't create a position just because someone you're interviewing would be a good fit if you did have that position.

  • Reasons to reject applicants:
    • - Negativity.
      - Job-shopping.
      - Lack of research about the profession or your company.
      - Not asking questions.
      - Have an outdated resume.
      - Bringing up salary and benefits too early.
      - Lack of direction.
